How to Play Catan

Watch this 9-minute video on how to play Catan:

As you can see, the game board consists of hexagons and represents the island of Catan. Players arrive as settlers and acquire resources. First, they set up tokens on the hexes of different terrains. These resources are represented by resource cards. The resources include sheep, ore, wood, clay, and wheat. The island is full of different lands that are capable of producing different resources.

For example, the hills produce brick, wood can be acquired through the forest, and the ore comes from the mountain. However, desert hexagon cannot produce any resource. Instead, a special token known as the robber token is positioned on the desert hexagon.

Each player gets their turn to roll the six-sided dice. This rolling of the dice actually determines which hexagon on the island will be chosen. The island includes five settlements, four cities, and fifteen roads. Each player gets a building costs card through which he organizes his settlement on the island. The objective is to settle on the island, build and achieve victory cards. Players get victory points every time they cross a milestone, such as making a road, library, or army. These victory points may vary under the quality of the accomplishment. For example, creating the longest road gets you 2 points, whereas constructing a university gets you 1 single victory point.

General Rules of the Game

Resource cards can be traded with other players throughout the game in the procedure of domestic trading. If a player gets to settle nearby a harbor, they get to exchange their resource cards with the original pile according to the ratio stated on the harbor. In special cases, if the blue player gets seven on their dice roll, they lose half of their resource cards to the original pile. After that, the blue player has to move the robber token to any other hexagon from the desert hex. If the blue player moves the robber token into the white player’s area, then the white player gets robbed from a single resource card by the blue player.

The player who gets to achieve more on the island by building the longest road or creating the largest army is awarded victory points. If they manage to keep building with luck, then after reaching 10 points, they would be victorious.
